Abstract : Among the Old and New Testament catenae are several extracts from John Chrysostom’s Homilies on Romans (CPG 4427). This article examines twelve excerpts attributed to John Chrysostom in the so-called Pseudo-Oecumenian Catena on Romans (CPG C165.1–5), the earliest preserved catena tradition on the Pauline Epistles. The analysis of these fragments, in conjunction with the 271 scholia ascribed to Chrysostom by the compiler of the so-called Typus Vaticanus catena (CPG C160), reveals that a manuscript of the Pseudo-Oecumenian tradition — namely, Vaticanus Graecus 2062 (GA 627) — shares the same readings as either the direct tradition or the manuscript Vaticanus Graecus 762 (GA 1915), one of the representatives of the Typus Vaticanus and one of the oldest catenae on Paul. Furthermore, the parallel analysis of the scholia in common between two different catenae traditions (the Pseudo-Oecumenian Catena and the catena of Typus Vaticanus) has demonstrated that forty-three scholia recorded with numbers instead of attributions by the compiler of the Pseudo-Oecumenian Catena, and possibly from Oecumenius, are attributed to Chrysostom in the Typus Vaticanus catena (GA 1915). This will offer new material to reflect on the relationship between Chrysostom and Oecumenius, and to what extent Oecumenius reuses material from Chrysostom or bases his exegesis on the one of the Antiochene Greek church fathers.
