Thirteen Greek manuscripts transmit a treatise on phlebotomy. Most of them attribute it to Hippocrates. It is in fact an extract from Gal. De cur. rat. per venae sect. A study of the transmission reveals that they are grouped into three families, two of which refer to a common archetype with an ante quem 1375, while the third dates back to the middle of the 13th century. Four codices of the better family (p) provide the sequence of four treatises on phlebotomy, two of which are unpublished. The edition of this small text is based on the six manuscripts of De curandi ratione plus the thirteen manuscripts of this extract. Of particular interest are some of the lessons presented in the extract, which are superior to the direct transmission of Galen's original treatise. As the manuscripts of Galen are not usually earlier than the 13th century (even though for De curandi we have the Laurentianus gr. 74.22, from the 12th century), it is possible to find good lessons scattered in the excerpts.
