Résumé :

Composed around the middle of the 7th century, John Climacus’ Scala Paradisi was originally intended to outline a true ascetic pilgrimage, leading monks to the ultimate encounter with God. A journey, like pilgrimages to holy places, fraught with difficulties and obstacles, dangers and pitfalls, both material and spiritual. There are thirty in the difficult ascesis of a monk. Central is the third step, dedicated to the ascetic practice of living in a state of perpetual pilgrimage. The article aims to investigate the role of images, and specifically the miniatures of the Greek Vatican manuscript 394 (Constantinople, 1080-1099), in characterising the personification of the Virtue of Pilgrimage, which shows the monk the way forward.
