Résumé :

The Στίχοι ὡραιότατοι (“Verses of Great Beauty”) constitute an early Palaiologan collection of paraenetic poems, which has attracted remarkably little attention despite its obvious literary merits. What makes the collection unique, is the use of the first person, the observations of natural phenomena, the recourse to myths and apophthegms, and the personal anecdotes. Its author is unknown; but he was clearly well-educated and it is clear from the content of these poems that he was writing for fellow intellectuals who were making a career in the higher echelons of Byzantine society. This chapter offers a thorough introduction discussing Palaiologan learning, patronage, language, and meter, and analysing the literary characteristics of the Στίχοι ὡραιότατοι, along with a new critical edition based on all the manuscripts, accompanied by a translation.
