This article constitutes the “editio princeps” of Gerasimos Vlachos’ Essay concerning the islamic religion. The edition is based on the manuscript of Athos’s Xenophontos Monastery n° 510 [213] and the article also includes an introduction and interpretative comments, providing an adequate understanding of the differences between Orthodoxy and Islam.
Gerasimos Vlachos (1605/1607-1685), bishop of Philadelphia whose see was in Venice, has the profile of an eminent scholar of his time, who wrote many speeches and essays with theological and philosophical interest. This Essay enlightens further varied aspects of the islamic faith and hence of the co-existance between Greek population and muslims during the ottoman occupation.
