On this decorative representation, from the bottom to the top of the folio, the ladder rises from Earth to heaven. Three main spheres of the spiritual progress on this gradual path are to be distinguished: at its base appears the indication of ἡ γῆ (“the Earth”), the ascetical rungs are considered as τὰ ὑπὲρ γῆν (“that which is above the Earth”), and above the scale crowned by a cross is the goal of perfection: ὁ οὐρανός (“heaven”). The circle below is undoubtedly symbolizing the celestial and mystical world, in which appears an eight-pointed cross bearing the Christogram of Christ Saviour, conqueror of the enemy who is sin and passions: ΙΣ ΧΣ ΝΙ ΚΑ) | 490 | ||
