Dimosthenis Stratigopoulos, Neophytos bishop of Grevenos: hymnographer, rhetorician and manuscript restorer
Neophytos, the bishop of Grevenos, is a less known personage of the 14th-15th centuries. The only ground evidence that we have is that he died on December 6th,1422. Five codices are related to his literary work: Parisinus gr. 2315, Lond. Egerton 2744, Athoniticus Protatou 92, a codex that was described by Gelzer, in 1903, and another one which was seen by Antonin Kapustin, in 1865, during his visit at the monastery of Theotokos in Spilaio. Letters, homilies, an astrological rule and hymnographic texts are included in Neophytos’ work. An anonymous chronicle refers to him as the Second and the New Chrysostom because of his rhetoric talent. The canon of astrological context is obviously part of didactic poetry. His hymnographic work is rich and has not been studied until today. In our research the catalogue of hymnographic texts, derived by the manuscripts which are also autographic texts is introduced. In Neophytos' work the following oxymoron occurs: on one hand, he uses sophisticated words and, on the other, he makes serious grammatical and syntax errors. An effort is being made to explain this curious phainomenon. Neophytos, in general, deals with manuscript restoration. This is obvious in manuscript Egerton 2744 and in Protatou 92. In the last one there are plenty of notes by his hand that prove this. Concluding, in our research we are trying through the manuscripts and his work to bring out to surface this intellectual hierarch of Grevena and explain the relative issues.
